Local pol still not on board with new BQX plan
Not so fast. While the mayor has been touting the Brooklyn Queens Connector (BQX) to provide a rapid transit route along the Brooklyn waterfront to Queens, Councilmember Carlos Menchaca — who represents Red Hook, Sunset Park, Greenwood Heights and portions of Windsor Terrace, Dyker Heights and Borough Park, and chairs the BQX Task Force in the City Council — still has reservations about the proposal, which has now moved to its next stage. The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced on Wednesday that it had selected VHB Engineering, Surveying, Landscape Architecture …

Life Inside: A Passive House in Carroll Gardens
Laura Mackall and Robert Manley did not set out to build a passive house when they embarked upon the renovation of their 1860s townhouse in Carroll Gardens. The building required a near gut renovation, so when they inquired for bids, Laura on a whim included a contractor with experience in passive construction. Surprisingly, the bids came back with a relatively small difference in cost. They decided to take the plunge.Laura’s father, Louis Mackall, a Connecticut-based…

Bath Beach apartment building to replace two-family house on Bay Parkway
In a sign of major changes taking place in Southwest Brooklyn’s housing stock, a two-family home on Bay Parkway will be torn down to make room for a much larger structure, an apartment house containing residential units. The new seven-story building, slated to be constructed at 8800 Bay Parkway in Bath Beach, could help ease the housing crunch in the area, according to civic leaders. YIMBY was the first to report that the property owner has filed permits with the New York City Department of Buildings to construct the apartment house. But a demolition permit to tear down the two-family home has not yet been obtained, according to YIMBY, which reported that the dwelling was originally built in the 1920s. The property owner…
Wanted Design: How Two French New Yorkers Gave the City What It Really Wanted
Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat, founders of the WantedDesign fair, at Industry City.Five years ago, a rumor spread through the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) at the Javits Center in Manhattan that there was “another design fair,” a smaller one (some said “cooler”), just down the street in the Chelsea Terminal Stores. Many made it, many did not. But what all attendees of the first WantedDesign fair in Manhattan found was a refreshingly different kind …
Culinary Institute for Refugees recognized as ‘Hero of the Month’
A Carroll Gardens nonprofit that works with refugees and survivors of human trafficking to build culinary careers was honored by the Borough President last week as a “Hero of the Month.” Borough President Eric Adams presented Alexander Harris, chef and culinary director at Emma’s Torch, with the award at a ceremony on Thursday at Borough Hall. The organization is named after Emma Lazarus, the poet and author who wrote the words that still mark the Statue of Liberty to this day: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” The restaurant …
Dyker Heights man’s charity hot chocolate stand shut down; he seeks to fight action
Every December since 2015, Dyker Heights resident Greg Maugeri has operated a hot chocolate-and-cookie stand in his aunt’s driveway to accommodate tourists who come to see the area’s famed Christmas lights. This year, he vowed to give the money to a cancer charity and even got a permit for the stand — but local authorities shut him down nonetheless, according to PIX11. In the past, Maugeri and his family have donated the money to Toys for Tots. This year, however, he lost his stepfather to cancer, so he decided to donate the money to Cookies for Kids Cancer, PIX11 reported. He pledged $2,500 to the charity, …
Brooklyn had the most emergencies of all boroughs in 2018, says Red Cross
Volunteers for the Red Cross responded to 600 emergencies in Brooklyn in 2018, making Brooklyn the busiest of all boroughs for crises. For example, Red Cross volunteers responded to a tragic fire on Eastern Parkway in August that left one person dead and displaced 15 families, according to News12 Brooklyn. The same month, volunteers responded to a fire on Coney Island Avenue that left four families without homes, News12 Brooklyn reported. “To start to set them on that path of recovery to tell them this might be the worst day of your life, but it does get better,” Garrison Harward of the Red Cross told News

Win over Hawks Makes 3 Straight
Hawks 86 Brooklyn 91 Brooklyn overcame shorter smaller breakdowns and knocked off the team (Atlanta) currently with 3rd best record in the East. The Nets did not look great, but that is 3 wins in a row and no one will give it back. Deron Williams did not play for the 12th time this season. The Nets received better all around play from point guard Shaun Livingston, and clutch play from cool Joe Johnson, who, though he did hit the winning shot in Oklahoma City had not notched double figures for scoring in 5 contests. The Daily Dime called him “Iso-Joe” multiple times on Monday night after a 4th quarter of Nets …
