This Meetup group was originally founded in 2008 by a handful of German-speaking parents in Astoria. In fall 2012 the group was integrated into the CityKinder network, a community and resources website for German speaking parents in the Tri-State area.
Our purpose is to connect German-speaking parents in the New York Metro area who are interested in socializing with other families and teaching their kids German, as well as providing education and support on a variety of topics concerning international families.
One third of our members reside in Manhattan. Approximately 50% of our families reside in Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside or Woodside (all in Queens) or in nearby Greenpoint and Williamsburg (both in Brooklyn). The rest of our members live in Westchester or on Long Island.
Three kinds of parents constitute our membership:
a) Families with one German-speaking parent;
b) Families where both parents are native German speakers, for example expats;
c) Families with German roots or an interest in the German language who don’t speak German at all but want their kids to learn German.
Membership in the meet-up confirms acceptance and adherence to the “Meet-up Etiquette,” mainly that you and your kids attend meet-ups at your own risk, that you RSVP before attending a meet-up, and that you keep your kids at home in case they are sick. Attendance of any meet up confirms acceptance of the “Activity Release of Liability” posted in the “Pages”-Section on the website of our meet up group. Grown-ups without kids can not attend any meet-up.
Our meet up’s are fun, educational, and help parents and kids practice and expand their knowledge of the German language.
Looking forward to meeting you all,
Gabi & CityKinder Team
