Focus on Brooklyn Designers: What’s New at ICFF 2014

February 23, 2020

The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF)—one of the centerpiece events of New York City’s design week— opens to the public on Tuesday, May 20th at Jacob K. Javits Center in Manhattan.

Last Saturday, I visited the fair and caught up with some of the Brooklyn designers who are exhibiting and were featured in our book Design Brooklyn.

**********

Pelle, founded by Jean and Oliver Pelle, has a studio located in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Recently, they put together a new catalog of their design work including the Bubble Chandeliers and popular Soap Stones. Their booth at ICFF also showcased their large scale emerald green Klemens Mirror and their Tripp Pendants, Sconces and Table lamp.

Designers, Katrina Vonnegut and Brian Kraft of Vonnegut/Kraft displayed the new Crescent Lounge—a modern daybed—made in ash and available in a variety of slipcovers. The pair recently moved their home and studio to Sunset Park.

Elodie Blanchard has incorporated drawings of animals into her textile work. One of her window treatment designs has a giraffe and hummingbird kissing applied to a thick felt material. Playful, imaginative, and whimsical, these pieces are fun anywhere and perfect  for a child’s room.

The team of designers at Uhuru pitched in to construct their own stand at the fair. The company’s Essential collection of tables was presented in the center of the space. The sizes varied from table to table as did the finishes. The company is also planning a move from their Red Hook studio this summer.

Designer Takeshi Miyakawa was also visiting Katie Deedy’s Grow House Grow booth when I stopped by. I love the narrative back story of Katie’s wallpaper designs. Her new black wallpaper with white patterning was especially appealing.

Hiroko Takeda had some of her most recent full-scale woven panels, as well as one of her three-dimensional pieces on display.  Hiroko will also be showing her work at Colony, a new designer’s co-op opening June 1st.

Flavor Paper presents their Andy Warhol collection of wallpapers. In an agreement with the Andy Warhol Foundation, Flavor Paper selected images, such as the iconic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, from the artist’s work to create these vibrant and unique papers. Jon Sherman also created a new designs for his newborn son, Cosmo’s nursery.            What a wonderful welcome!
