RIP PhifeDawg, aka Malik Taylor and some of 90’s NYC
(Above a still from the music video for “Jazz/Buggin’ Out” by “A Tribe Called Quest” (1991) featuring a then mostly desolate DUMBO waterfront in the background. Of course that building behind them in this shot is being made currently, into condos.)Phife Dawg is dead at 45. This one personally hurts.”Phife Dawg” aka Malik Taylor was a lyricist and key member of hiphop’s ground breaking group “A Tribe Called Quest”Some folks rant about people mourning the death of entertainers or celebs, and if you’re kind of fan of “A …
FIPS Broken News: Ta Ta Tea Lounge (The End of Yet Another Era)
On a recent visit to famed Park Slope institution, the Tea Lounge, while sipping an Iced Americano on the mangy couch nearest the entrance after dropping off laundry next door, I said to my husband, “I pretty much never need to come in here again.” What I didn’t know then is that as of December 14th, I won’t have a choice; As we mentioned in WHASSUP yesterday, TL IS CLOSING after 14 years in their cavernous Union Street space (their first location was on 7th and 10th, and closed in 2008). How many times has FIPS — or …

Maybe it IS your first Rodeo?
Here’s something totally unexpected for your Friday night plans: the 13th annual stop of the Professional Bull Riding Majors tour at MSG. Sure, it may be hard to imagine pyrotechnics, rodeo clowns, buckin’ broncos, and the top 35 bull riders in the world competing in something called “Unleash the Beast” happening in such close proximity to the Macy’s flagship and K-Town karaoke, but such is the kind of random mishmosh that makes New York the remarkable place that it is. If

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Brooklyn, whatever your speed
Photo: Nowadays Ah, 2018…the year that zipped by while tugging at every political and ideological nerve it could snatch. While we prepare to reflect upon personal moments of growth, follies, loves lost and conquered, ledgers jumping red and green, and the tiny victories afforded us by living in this brutal and beautiful city, there is one question that is still left looming, almost universally, in the air: Where are we going this New Year’s Eve? Well, we here at Brooklyn Based understand the pressure you’re under to ring things in on an appropriate note, and are happy to help. Below you’ll find a list of all-nighters, champagne toasts, and public spectacles (beyond the curbside meltdowns we’ve …

An Update On Our Direction Moving Forward
Park Slope is a neighborhood in northwest Brooklyn, New York City. Park Slope is roughly bounded by Prospect Park and Prospect Park West to the east, Fourth Avenue to the west, Flatbush Avenue to the north, and Prospect Expressway to the south. Generally, the section from Flatbush Avenue to Garfield Place (the “named streets”) is considered the “North Slope”, the section from 1st through 9th Streets is considered the “Center Slope”, and south of 10th Street, the “South Slope”. The neighborhood takes its name from its location on the western slope of neighboring Prospect Park. Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue are its primary commercial streets, while its east-west side streets are lined with brownstones and apartment …
The last night before gentrification: The 77′ NYC Blackout
I remember my aunt (who will undoubtedly toss some cents at this post) telling us it was a blackout. My grandmother or maybe my mom, was skeptical. On this mid July day 40 years ago I was a tiny child and the day was still brightly lit at something passed 7:30 PM or probably later based on what came next. Also the TV was on. Contradictory to any “Blackout” talk the house offered, Roger Grimsby a name who bore a a news man on Channel 7 to fit it, joylessly told the news of the day, and I’m certain (due to my strange memory) he was talking about power outages. The household debate between a girl, her…

Luxury hotel Marmara Park Avenue pitching rooms as ‘authentic NYC apartments’
Your apartment of course, looks just like this. via Marmara Park Avenue You know how it is when you move to New York City. You call your friends and family back home in Topeka, Iowa or wherever you’re from and they drawl into the phone and ask if your apartment is JUST like the one from Sex in the City or Seinfeld or Girls or The Parent ‘Hood. It’s what people who don’t know any better expect when they come to New York, so of course a new hotel in Manhattan, the Marmara Park Avenue, is pitching themselves as a chance to stay in a real New York apartment. Just, you know, without…
Department of Buildings deems McKibbin Lofts basements ‘perilous to human life’
They’re just not figuring this out? Photo by Emily Paup Hey, speaking of totally authentic NYC apartments, what’s up with the McKibbin Lofts lately? Last time we checked in with them, there was a totally authentic dumpster fire in front of the building. Today’s news? The Department of Buildings slapped the basement at 255 McKibbin Street with an order to vacate on Friday, according to a tip sent in to Gothamist, with the order saying that the basement’s conditions were “perilous to human life.” Looks like…
The Williamsburg J. Crew is beyond parody
wow. such graffiti. much hipster. very art. via J. Crew We tried to goof on the Williamsburg J. Crew by getting hold of the employee handbook for the store, but you know, it sounds like they’re doing a good enough job parodying themselves. From T Magazine: “We didn’t want to just go and do graffiti,” says Jenna Lyons, J.Crew’s creative director. Initially, she wanted to keep the store’s facade as she’d found it — covered in posters and spray-painted tags. “Unfortunately when we did a survey of the space, the facade was actually in such poor shape we had to replace quite a bit of the brick,” she…

Brooklyn Bridge waves white flag, just gives up, suggesting we all should do the same
Good idea, Brooklyn Bridge. via Mark Weprin’s Twitter Move over, brown goo in Gowanus, New York City has a new mystery to be collectively baffled by: Why has the American flag that proudly waves on top of the Brooklyn Bridge been replaced by the white flag of surrender?
