When host Brazil faced off yesterday against an upstart Croatia team in Sao Paulo, it was the opening match in professional sport’s grandest spectacle. Every four years the World Cup pits the thirty-two best (or perhaps most geographically fortunate) football sides in an elimination tournament. This year’s Cup will be played over the next four weeks as South America’s largest democracy hosts the most democratic of games. For the casual soccer fan (only in America is the …

Street Milling and Paving in Brooklyn Heights Next Week
With apologies for the late notice they received from the City’s DOT, the Brooklyn Heights Association has notified us of street milling and re-paving to be done each weekday next week (Monday, July 21 through Friday, July 25) from 7:00 a.m. until about 4:00 p.m. on many Brooklyn Heights streets. Parked cars will have to be removed from these streets on the affected days; otherwise they will be towed. A list of affected streets, and days when they will be affected, is here.
Where Was the 84th Precinct While Vandals Devastated North Brooklyn Heights and Beyond
Last night vandals wreaked havoc in Brooklyn Heights. The amount of damage to property and cars in the area and shown on Karl’s video demands that the question be asked — where was the NYPD? With at least two recent incidents of vandalism in the area recently and increased foot traffic due to the popularity of Brooklyn Bridge Park, it’s simply ponderous that additional patrols have not been deployed to the area. The damage continues all the way to Montague Street as a BHB tipster…
Disco Food Cart on Columbia Heights
First there was the rogue hot dog vendor who decided to set up shop on Montague Terrace. Now there’s a disco food cart on Columbia Heights near Squibb Park entrance to Brooklyn Bridge Park. While we’re pretty sure this is a legal spot, BHB commenter Peter points out in another BBP related thread: Yes, such an astounding success that during the weekends it feels like we’re living at Great Adventure. The kabob cart with the flashing neon signage on Columbia Heights completes the scene. Wonderful. So is this a thing? Do you think that this sort of enterprise should be allowed in the area? Comment away. Oh and we’ve created a GIF…
Brooklyn Beep Adams on Brooklyn Bridge White Flags: I’m Not Laughing; Offers Reward for the Capture of the Vandals
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams has released a statement regarding this morning’s flag exchange attack on the Brooklyn Bridge: “If flying a white flag atop the Brooklyn Bridge is someone’s idea of a joke, I’m not laughing. The public safety of our city is of paramount importance, particularly our landmarks and bridges that are already known to be high-risk targets. We will not surrender our public safety to anyone, at any time. Political and social expression, whatever its message may be, has a place in our society, but not at the expense of others’ security. I am confident in the NYPD’s ability to investigate this matter.” ….
Apple Tree Pruning Time at Poplar Street Community Garden
This Saturday, July 26, from 11:00 a.m. until some time in the afternoon when the trees all get pruned, it’s apple tree pruning time at the Poplar Street Community Garden, at Hicks and Poplar streets. Come by and lend a hand; if you haven’t done it before, there will be experienced pruners there to show you how and lend you the proper equipment. Bring sturdy gloves if you have them; if not, there may be some spares you can borrow. If you’re lucky, you may get a spare apple or two to take home. Or, if you’re of the “Work fascinates me, I can watch it
