Gowanus rezoning opponents to sue city to stop virtual ULURP

January 17, 2021

They’ll see the city in court! Opponents of the Gowanus rezoning plan to sue the city Friday, alleging the Department of City Planning’s virtual Zoom hearings don’t allow for enough public review for the neighborhood-wide land use changes. “When you’re dealing with a massive project of this scale that is going to impact so many people’s lives, the community must have its voice heard; that is simply not possible with virtual public hearings,” said attorney Jason Zakai on behalf of the plaintiffs, anti-rezoning group Voice of Gowanus, in a Jan. 15 statement. …

See it: Drive-by shooter unleashes barrage of bullets on Gowanus street

August 16, 2020

The NYPD released a video of a drive-by gunman firing multiple shots from the passenger seat of a vehicle in Gowanus, hitting one victim multiple times on Aug. 11.  The shooter leaned out of the side window of the moving white sedan on Baltic Street near Third Avenue at 12:50 am, pulling the trigger at least three times, the video shows.   The 50-year-old victim was riding a bicycle through a nearby courtyard when he was struck in the shoulder and upper back, before the shooter’s car sped off along Third Avenue.  Emergency medical personnel rushed the victim to Methodist Hospital in stable condition. Police have not yet made any…

Gowanus locals release renderings for proposed park, countering city’s affordable housing plan

August 16, 2020

They want to put the green in Gowanus Green! A group of Gowanus open space advocates are pushing to halt the city’s plans to build a mixed-use affordable housing development on a polluted brownfield site next to the noxious canal, saying city builders should turn the six-acre lot into a park instead.  “I think there’s a big push to densify and I think, if we’ve learned anything from COVID, we need to think about how we build our cities and how we focus on …
