St. Ann’s Church Presents “Cosmic American Music” Thursday Evening

July 11, 2021

This Thursday evening, July 8, starting at 6:00, St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church, Clinton and Montague streets, will present a concert by The Coolest Ranch (photo), a Brooklyn based trio who bill their sound as “Cosmic American Music.” This caught my eye because “Cosmic American Music” is the term coined by Gram Parsons to describe his “hybrid of country, rhythm and blues, soul, folk, and rock.”The concert is part of St. Ann’s summer concert series, that benefits the church’s “Pop-Up Pantry,” which provides non-perishable food and fresh produce to those in need. Those attending the concert are asked to bring food donations or make a cash offering to support …

Bluegrass and Books on Line from Brooklyn Bridge Park

September 13, 2020

This Sunday, September 13 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., the Brooklyn Americana Music Festival, in conjunction with Brooklyn Bridge Park, will present on line the “Women’s Stage” portion of its 2020 “Long Distance” festival, featuring a diverse group of women musicians with styles “spanning traditional and modern Country, Folk, Blues, Old Time, Bluegrass, and Jazz.” The opening act will be Nora Brown, a young Brooklynite who is a stellar banjo artist, having been taught by the late Shlomo Pestcoe. The photo, which I took at the 2018 Brooklyn Folk Festival, shows her at age twelve. The Festival is free; there’s more information here.Another of Brooklyn Bridge Park’s traditional outdoor…

This One Goes to Eleven’s 2019 Metal Dundies

February 2, 2020

Another year in metal has come and gone, and as Krampus clunks from rooftop to rooftop, it’s time once more to look back on the good, bad, and truly, utterly ridiculous from music’s most truly, utterly ridiculous sub-culture. So saddle up and join us for This One Goes to Eleven’s second-annual metal Dundies, a network sitcom-inspired take on yearbook superlatives applied to a bunch of albums about copulating with Satan’s prodigious member. Almost every album featured below is one I endorse based on musical content and/or relevancy, so kick back, relax, and, please, for the love of everything unholy, try not to get your feelings hurt. THE DUNDIES: Tales From the Crypt – Ossuarium – Living Tomb In Space…

The Golden Festival has Balkanized! The annual Zlatne Uste Golden Festival has overflowed the confines of the Grand Prospect Hall, with a handful of Balkan band-related events taking place all over Brooklyn before and after the official fest. Here are some of those highlights: Soul men  Dive into slavic brass music by dancing to nine-piece band Slavic Soul Party, playing at Park Slope’s Barbes bar on Jan. 14. The American-Balkan jazz band combines klezmer music — expressive instrumental music by Eastern European Ashkenazi Jews — with funk and New …

A kitschy restaurant and music venue called the Turk’s Inn opening soon in Bushwick

June 23, 2019

credit: Jeff Brown & The Turk’s Inn The Turk’s Inn & The Sultan Room is opening June 27 at the Jefferson stop in Bushwick. The over-the-top design will be an homage to a restaurant that was formerly in Hayward, Wisconsin. They are already serving to-go kebabs and shawarma and the music venue will open in July or August. Two fans of the legendary, shuttered Wisconsin supper club the Turk’s Inn are opening what they’re calling a replica of the original here in New York City — in a big bi-level space including a rooftop patio, a doner kebab takeout counter, and an adjacent music venue…. The 5,000-square-foot, 60-seat restaurant will have the same kitschy aesthetic…

2018: The Year in Electronica

December 29, 2018

Fans of electronica had a lot to be happy about this year. Aphex Twin released new music (always good news), Lone released more great Ambivert Tools, Khan issued a double pack of old tapes (Traditions 08), and Autechre saw the official release of its epic NTS Sessions, available in 12-LP and 8-CD sets. There were also many newcomers who kept things interesting. Some relished in retro, but others pushed the boundaries. Electronica continued to spark new directions in indie rock as well. The following is just a sampling — 13 featured recordings — of what 2018 had to offer house and techno heads. Maestros Aphex…

SBTRKT announces new album, shares song feat. Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig (listen)

July 23, 2014

by Andrew Sacher It’s been three years since SBTRKT released his excellent debut album — though he’s put out things like an instrumental EP and a live album in that time — and he’s now finally announced its followup, Wonder Where We Land. He also shared the new song “New Dorp, New York,” which features Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig on lead vocals. It’s a pretty wacky cut that’s a step sideways from his debut LP and not very Vampire Weekend-like either. It just premiered on BBC Radio 1, and you can listen to Details of My Life’s radio rip (via Pitchfork) below. LP teaser video below too. Continue

See Our Pick for Song of the Summer Performed Live this Weekend

July 23, 2014

Panama (McLean Stephenson) Contrary to popular opinion, the summer song of 2014 to me is not “Fancy ” by Iggy Azalea and Charlie XCX. Rather, it’s “Always” by the Australian electronic trio Panama, off of its most recent EP of the same name. There’s really lots to love about this track as it’s danceable, hypnotic, sophisticated, romantic and surrounded by cinematic textures and an infectious melody. If you don’t believe me, listen for yourself: A little background about this band who ironically is not from the country it’s named for, sort of like that ’80s group Asia. Panama was formed by singer Jarrah McCleary and had previously released another EP, It’s Not Over, whose…
