Lawyers trade barbs in 80 Flatbush upzoning case
The City Council’s approval of the upzoning of 80 Flatbush Ave. last year “was anything but a rubber stamp,” a lawyer for the New York City Educational Construction Fund said in a court hearing on Friday. “Public benefits drove this project,” Lawrence Bartelemucci asserted in oral arguments before Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Melissa Anne Crane. The public benefits the 80 Flatbush mega-project will deliver include a new elementary school and a high school to replace Khalil Gibran International Academy, office space and 200 units of affordable housing, he said. The suit brought by the 400 & 500 State Street Block Association and its steering committee seeks the annulment of the upzoning — which changed 80 Flatbush’s floor area ratio, or FAR, to 15.7 from 6.5. Floor area…

Democracy vouchers stall, but they could make a comeback
Publicly funded elections remain a pipe dream in New York City after the Charter Revision Commission voted down a measure to introduce “democracy vouchers” into city elections. The proposal would have completely removed private donations from elections, opting for public dollars to fund campaigns entirely. Each citizen would be given a “democracy voucher,” worth some portion of funding, and could direct the flow of public money to a candidate of their choosing. Advocates argue that the system would force politicians …

Tune In To Brooklyn Unfiltered
Don’t adjust your dials, folks: Brooklyn Unfiltered is coming in over the airwaves and hitting bars and taps near you. The beer itself is hazy, but the clean, smooth finish and gently bready body are perfectly tuned. Brooklyn Unfiltered is our take on the keller pilsner style, which traces its roots to the oldest days of lagering. Back then, beers were stored in cool, dark caves for months to allow that distinct lager finish to develop. This process lent its name to the overall type, as the word “lager” comes from the German word for “hold” or “store,” while “keller” translates to “cellar.” …
Back in Brooklyn, Sanders predicts White House win in 2020
Sen. Bernie Sanders on Saturday returned to Brooklyn, his birthplace, for the first rally of his second presidential campaign and sought to tie his working-class background to his populist views that are helping reshape the Democratic Party. He predicted he would win the nomination in a field of now-double digit rivals and then defeat President Donald Trump, “the most dangerous president in modern American history.” The emotional peak of Sanders’ speech came as he remembered his childhood in Midwood, not far from where the rally was held. “I know where I came from,” he said. “And I will never forget that. Unlike …
