Clark Street station to close for elevator repairs starting next month

October 3, 2021

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Friday that the Clark Street station will officially close for elevator repairs on Nov. 3 — and it’s expected to remain closed until work is finished next spring. Trains in both directions will skip the stop for the duration, according to the agency, which recommends that riders who would usually use the station, which serves the 2/3 lines, instead use the nearby High Street or Borough Hall-Court street stations. Both are accessible from Clark Street via the B25 bus. The station’s upper level will remain open so customers can still access businesses located there. ‘He was the sweetest thing ever’: Family of Hamilton Avenue hit-and-run victim demands justice

March 7, 2021

Family members of fatal hit-and-run victim Imorne Horton demanded justice for their lost loved-one at a vigil Friday, after a driver struck the Red Hook resident and left him to die on Hamilton Avenue last week.  “I’m hoping that there will be justice served for my son and that the person is apprehended and will be incarcerated for killing my child,” said Horton’s mother, Tasha Horton, at the March 5 gathering near the scene near Court Street. “I miss him dearly. I just hope that I get justice for him.” The 31-year-old died after a driver…

Retired subway operator recreates model train yard with mini Kentile Floors sign

December 13, 2020

A former subway operator has painstakingly recreated a model of industrial rail yards and buildings at Gowanus and Sunset Park, including a custom 3-D printed replica of the iconic former Kentile Floors sign! “It’s a part of Brooklyn I grew up in as a kid,” said 65-year-old Park Slope native Bill Graham, who now lives in Staten Island. “The sign immediately invokes a ton of memories.” The red-lettered sign atop a Second …

Locals raise alternative plans for Meeker Avenue following DOT’s parking lot proposal

November 15, 2020

They’re not gonna be meek about it! A week after locals panned a city scheme to add hundreds of metered parking spaces beneath the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Williamsburg, activists have taken matters into their own hands to discuss alternative improvements to the long-neglected stretch along Meeker Avenue.  “The fact that the Department of Transportation is striking the ground over there and putting in meters means we’ll have to do it ourselves,” said Greenpoint organizer Kevin LaCherra, who hosted a virtual Nov. 12 discussion about the issue. The north Brooklynites floated a wide…

Opinion: ‘Words of Rizzdom’ from the road

August 16, 2020

I said last week this week’s column would be about the Brooklyn Democratic Party, but I’ve decided to once again make it about weird transportation, among other topics. I write from my vacation — I am taking a week to bicycle from Hudson, New York back to Brooklyn. There’s so much I’ve enjoyed about biking up here. For instance, I can get a lot closer to wildlife than I would if I were driving a car whose motor noise would scare them away. Most of all, I enjoy the feeling …

Battery powered Citi Bikes return after being pulled for brake and battery issues last year

February 23, 2020

The city’s largest purveyor of bank-sponsored rental bikes is now offering battery-powered bicycles — for the second time — after first pulling the juiced-up bikes, which had a penchant for sending riders flying over the handlebars and bursting into flames, last spring.  Lyft, a rider share company that owns Citi Bike, rolled out a “few hundredâ€ pedal-assist bicycles on Feb. 19, in a move that city transportation officials hailed as a positive step towards encouraging more New Yorkers to embrace cycling. “We are confident that the return of these sought-after bikes will allow our partners at Lyft to build on the record…

Hot pods: bike storage startup opens first Brooklyn vault

December 15, 2019

In pod we trust! Bike-riding Brooklynites finally have a safe and dry place to stow their ride if they want to hop on the train at the borough’s biggest transit hub, thanks to one entrepreneur’s bike storage system.  Brooklyn’s first Oonee Pod, a modular bicycle vault that debuted in Manhattan last year, is open for business outside Atlantic Terminal in Fort Greene. The pod is the brain-child of Shabazz Stuart, a Crown Heights native who says providing safe storage for those who choose to move around the city efficiently is the next step towards becoming a 21st-century city.  “We need to start to treat those who embrace and utilize mobility alternatives as first-class citizens,” Stuart said …

Another Interruption in R Train Service Between Brooklyn and Manhattan?

March 3, 2019

The Brooklyn Paper reports that four elected officials, identified as U.S. Rep. Max Rose (D–Bay Ridge), State Sen. Andrew Gounardes (D–Bay Ridge), Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus (D–Coney Island), and Councilman Justin Brannan (D–Bay Ridge), have written to Transit Authority CEO Andy Byford asking that he consider suspending service in both directions between Court Street here in Brooklyn Heights and Whitehall Street in lower Manhattan in order to expedite needed repair work. As you may recall, an identical service suspension took place between October 2013 and September 2014 to repair damage to the tunnel under the East River caused by Hurricane Sandy. Whatever needs urgent repair must be in that tunnel. Presumably N trains, which follow the R route late at night…
