They’re not gonna be meek about it! A week after locals panned a city scheme to add hundreds of metered parking spaces beneath the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Williamsburg, activists have taken matters into their own hands to discuss alternative improvements to the long-neglected stretch along Meeker Avenue. “The fact that the Department of Transportation is striking the ground over there and putting in meters means we’ll have to do it ourselves,” said Greenpoint organizer Kevin LaCherra, who hosted a virtual Nov. 12 discussion about the issue. The north Brooklynites floated a wide…
New farmers market to debut at Domino Park
A new weekly farmers market will open at Domino Park in Williamsburg on July 12. The greenmarket will offer fresh produce, dairy, eggs, and baked goods at the privately-owned waterfront greenspace at S. Fourth Street, according to a joint release by the park’s owner Two Trees Management and GrowNYC, a nonprofit managing a network of such markets across the city. The market will operate Sundays from 9 am-3 pm between Kent Avenue and River Street through November 22, offering north Brooklynites an array of goods, including bread from the borough’s own bread makers Knead Love Bakery and She Wolf Bakery…

Win Son Bakery receiving accolades from critics for sweet and savory treats
The Williamsburg Taiwanese bakery has only been open for a few weeks, but people are already buzzing about their food. The restaurant is a spin-off of critic’s favorite Win Son. The counter joint’s name is a bit misleading since in addition to doughnuts, custard toasts, and cookies, they also have savory dishes like a burger and a pork-knuckle breakfast sandwich. Grub Street proclaims Your New Favorite Burger Might Be at Win Son Bakery: There’s melted raclette blanketing the burger itself, a garnish of scallions, and an actually special sauce that’s mayo-based and made with funky and savory doufu ru or fermented bean curd as well as ginger, scallions…
Williamsburg business owners host progressive Shabbat services
A pair of Williamsburg moms and business owners have launched a progressive new Shabbat service with the help of an unlikely benefactor — The Roman Catholic Church! Leah Fink and Allyson Stone launched their new Shabbat service, called B’nai Brooklyn, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Havemeyer Street on Nov. 15, and the collaboration between faiths has since blossomed into a thriving religious community, according to Fink. “We were blown away by the reaction,” said Fink, an educational consultant and owner of ClassesAt. The women created B’nai Brooklyn to address the need for a more progressive Reform Jewish synagogue amid the area’s large Orthodox community, but they struggled to find a venue until Fink’s father, Danny, suggested …
We had a good run…
Websites change and so do neighborhoods. FREE Williamsburg turns 22 this year, which would normally make our spry little publication a millennial. Unfortunately, if you convert 22 to internet years it makes us, well, decrepit. When I first arrived in New York in September of 1996, I rented a sizable two bedroom apartment on 93 Berry Street, just a few blocks from the Bedford Avenue L train stop. It was $900 a month, which made the shared rent of $450 that my roommate and I paid pretty darn affordable. In 1996, Williamsburg was already changing. North of…
Le Crocodile is now open at the Wythe Hotel
Le Crocodile/ Liz Clayman We still miss Reynard, which closed quietly back in September. Thankfully, we’re happy to report that a new restaurant has opened in the same space on the ground floor at the Wythe Hotel. Le Crocodile is a French bistro from the same people behind Greenpoint’s Chez Ma Tante serving up classic dishes like Grilled Chicken and Fries, Duck Leg, and Steak Tartare. The space has been updated with warmer lighting and a handful of comfortable booths up front. The service is outstanding, as is the food. In short, we highly recommend it. From TimeOut: If you’ve been to the hip Williamsburg hotel, you may remember it for its former restaurant, Reynard, once a part of…
New W-burg proposal by Two Trees includes towers with a waterfront park, beach, and amphitheater
via Two Trees Management Two Trees has a new proposal for the area just north of Domino Park. Like the Domino Sugar complex, the proposal is over-the-top, ambitious, and largely out of scale with the rest of the neighborhood. But now that the quaint, lovable Williamsburg of old is ruined anyway, we say bring it on. From Curbed: Developers Two Trees Management—also behind the Domino megaproject—unveiled a proposal to build two mixed-use towers, up to 650-feet-tall, designed by Bjarke …
Amid rise in package theft, a new service relies on the kindness of neighbors
A new digital service connects online shoppers in Williamsburg with neighbors willing to hold on to their deliveries, keeping them safe from doorstep thieves. The post Amid rise in package theft, a new service relies on the kindness of neighbors appeared first on Brooklyn Eagle.
Andrew Tarlow opened a new wine store in Williamsburg
We’re still terribly upset that Tarlow’s Reynard has closed. At least this is good news: Williamsburg’s new wine shop has a big-name owner: Andrew Tarlow, the man behind vital area restaurants like Diner and Marlow & Sons. Tarlow’s new shop, Stranger Wines located at 132 Havemeyer St. near South First Street, focuses on the ultra-trendy natural and organic wines. Producers include Fond Cypres, Viñateros Bravos, and Susucaru with price points from $12 to $100. Winemakers will visit and pour their wines for …
Ainslie: a huge Italian restaurant and beer garden is now open in Williamsburg
Ainslie opened last night in Williamsburg, just off the Lorimer L train stop. The 10,000-square-foot restaurant will serve Italian staples and wood-fired pizza. Ainslie also has four bars with 20 wines by the glass, four wines on tap and 16 beers from local craft breweries on tap. Needless to say, we can’t wait to give Ainslie a try: Ainslie is a 10,000 square foot, 340-person multi-level Italian wine bar, beer garden, restaurant and rooftop brought to you by Sergio and Mario Riva as well as AJ Bontempo of South Village Hospitality, …

Measles cases rise to 566 citywide, but the disease slows down in Sunset Park
The number of confirmed measles cases in New York City has risen to 566, up 31 since May 28. The epidemic, mostly contained to the Orthodox Jewish community in Williamsburg, has continued to spread in Sunset Park with 13 cases, but at a slower pace, with only one person contracting the disease in the last week. Assistant Speaker of the Assembly Felix Ortiz held a press conference on Friday afternoon with Sunset Park doctors to let residents know that help is available. The doctors reiterated the importance of vaccinations and outlined some of the dangers of the disease. Dr…
The Best Places To Drink Outside in North Brookyn
Brooklyn Barge Bar When the weather gets warm, finding a bar in Manhattan where you can drink outside is next to impossible. The few places that are suitable for outside libations are always too crowded. Thankfully, North Brooklyn has you covered. From Freehold’s grassy courtyard in South Williamsburg, to the impressive skyline vistas at Greenpoint’s Brooklyn Barge Bar, North Brooklyn is packed with options. By Nabe Williamsburg greenpoint bushwick map Williamsburg Spuyten Duyvil, credit Pinterist Spuyten Duyvil 359 Metropolitan Avenue, Williamsburg We say: A spacious garden with lawn chairs and a wall covered in ivy that never seems to get too crowded. Spuyten Duyvil is a favorite for craft beer lovers and has one of the larger selections in the neighborhood. They…
Greenpoint Beer and Ale is reopening this spring, Northern Territory is not
We mentioned back in the fall that Greenpoint Beer and Ale and Northern Territory were set to be demolished for generic office space. Since then, Greenpoint Beer and Ale has shuttered but will happily be reopening this spring at 1150 Manhattan Avenue. No date has been announced, but their colorful beer tower has arrived. Northern Territory had initially hoped to reopen in its current location for one final summer, but Greenpointers reports that their plans have changed: This past November, we announced that Northern Territory would be hibernating for the winter and planned to reopen this Spring (as in now) for their final year at the corner of Franklin and Meserole Avenue…
Other Half is bringing a huge brewery to the Domino Sugar site
This is great news for beer nerds in North Brooklyn. We’re big fans of Other Half! Along with Singlecut, Finback, Grimm, LIC Beer Project and Root & Branch, their hoppy IPAs are among our favorites in the city. Other Half is plotting a 3,600-square-foot brewery inside 1 South First, a new mixed-use building under construction at the corner of Grand Street and Kent Avenue. It’s the same dramatic Cookfox-designed building where another location of beloved pizza restaurant Roberta’s will be. The real estate development is expected to open at the end of this year and is part of the overall revitalization of Williamsburg’s Domino …
A million hearts will break when they learn Rosemary’s Greenpoint Tavern is closing
Rosemary’s Greenpoint Tavern, a Bedford Ave. fixture since 1955, will close on Feb. 28. Photo: Carrie Lou It’s always been happy hour at Rosemary’s Greenpoint Tavern, a warm and welcoming Williamsburg hole-in-the-wall that has stood defiantly unchanged for decades amid Bedford Avenue’s rapid gentrification, its neon sign signaling a refuge from the corporate franchising that has swallowed the neighborhood’s busiest street. But in a few weeks the lights will go out at the Greenpoint Tavern. Its namesake owner, Rosemary Bleday, has worked behind the bar since her parents opened the tavern in 1955. Now 86, a bartender last night told us that Rosemary has opted to retire from her regular perch as the watering hole is being drowned out by the noise and mess…
Put on your trucker caps and white belts for the Myspace Party this Friday
Freewilliamsburg friend Russ Marshalek is throwing a party at Glasslands. (He’s part of the collective ADVENTUREs, who brought you the popular Robyn Party.) Don’t miss the Myspace party this Friday at Glasslands: Russ Marshalek and fellow soundtrack spinners Chris Choyce and Marley Magaziner originally wanted to create an event dedicated to the music of Myspace-era bands such as Dashboard Confessional, Saves The Day, and the Killers, but eventually decided to extend the bash to the whole website. “One of the first genres we agreed upon was the pop-punk-screamo-emo genre,” said Marshalek, who lives in Greenpoint. …

The Williamsburg J. Crew is beyond parody
wow. such graffiti. much hipster. very art. via J. Crew We tried to goof on the Williamsburg J. Crew by getting hold of the employee handbook for the store, but you know, it sounds like they’re doing a good enough job parodying themselves. From T Magazine: “We didn’t want to just go and do graffiti,” says Jenna Lyons, J.Crew’s creative director. Initially, she wanted to keep the store’s facade as she’d found it — covered in posters and spray-painted tags. “Unfortunately when we did a survey of the space, the facade was actually in such poor shape we had to replace quite a bit of the brick,” she…
